Meet Dev’or Cosmetics
Dev’or Group is a family-run cosmetics business which has been operating since 1997. It is formed of two divisions: a farming side for their herbs with some general crops for sale, as well as the Dev’or cosmetics side which consists of 15 different all-natural and self-grown products. The business was originally developed by the mother, Nompumelelo Mpati, but now her two sons run the business together (Each managing a different division). When the mother ran the business, products were made from herbs grown around the backyard. With years of experience and practice going into their small batches of products – the brothers looked to scale. After securing a grant in 2016 for destroyed mining land, they had a chance to increase production. After over a year of work in redeveloping damaged land from mining, the Dev’or team was able to create multiple acres of farmable land. The resourcefulness, grit, and determination to grow their business highlight what it takes to have a chance at success in the world of entrepreneurship.
The recent troubles of the pandemic have proved the durability behind Dev’or’s business. The Dev’or team was granted permission to operate during South Africa’s lockdown as an essential business. They took their experience with the cosmetics side to develop over 3,000 units of hand sanitizers in the course of 2 months. Dev’or demonstrates how to successfully weave a business to become a supporting aspect of their community – their ability to step up and provide a means of safety during the chaos, a steady production of food for their community, a variety of natural cosmetic products and employment for 7 members of their community highlights the contributions one small business can make.
